Scaling plans and managing multiple funded accounts

How prop firm scaling plans generally work, how to scale risk safely, when to withdraw and how to manage several funded accounts without stacking risk.

Passing one challenge is the start, not the finish. Once you are funded, two questions come up quickly: how do you grow the account, and should you run more than one? This lesson covers how scaling plans generally work and how to manage several funded accounts without multiplying your risk.

Scaling terms differ widely between firms, so treat this as a framework. Check the exact rules for your account before you rely on any of them.

How scaling plans usually work

A scaling plan rewards consistent performance with a larger account, a higher profit split, or both. Common features include:

  • Milestones: a profit threshold over a set period, sometimes combined with a number of payouts.
  • Account increases: the balance grows by a set step once you meet a milestone.
  • Split increases: your share of profits rises at certain stages.
  • Conditions: some plans require no rule breaches during the review period, or apply a consistency rule.

Read the scaling terms before you start trading the funded account, because some milestones depend on behavior you need to plan for from day one, such as withdrawing regularly or trading a minimum number of days.

Scale your risk, not just your account

When an account grows, its loss limits grow with it, but so does the dollar value of each mistake. A larger account is a good reason to review your risk per trade, not a reason to increase it automatically.

Many traders keep risk per trade fixed as a percentage of the account and let position size grow with the balance. Others keep it fixed in dollars for the first few weeks after a step up, then move to the percentage. Either approach is fine if it is written down in advance. Recalculate sizes with the position size calculator after each change.

Withdraw or compound?

On a funded account, profits left in the account usually do not compound the way they would in a personal account, because the firm's limits are tied to the starting balance or a trailing level. Withdrawing turns simulated profit into real money and reduces what you can lose to a single bad week.

The trade-off is that some firms use buffers, caps or scaling conditions that reward leaving profit in the account for a while. Check whether withdrawing affects your drawdown level or scaling progress, and use the profit calculator to compare scenarios. Our payout guides summarize payout terms by firm.

Running multiple funded accounts

Multiple accounts can smooth out results and increase total payout capacity. They can also multiply losses if you treat them as one large position.

Correlated risk

If you place the same trade on three accounts, you have one trade at three times the size. A losing day can breach all three at once. Before adding accounts, decide your total risk across all of them, and size each account's trades so that the combined loss on a bad day is acceptable.

Firm rules on multiple accounts

Firms set limits on how many accounts you can hold, how much total funded capital you can manage, and whether you can copy trades between accounts. Some firms also prohibit opposing positions across accounts, which is often treated as hedging abuse. Confirm these rules in writing before you buy a second account.

Spreading across firms

Holding accounts at different firms spreads the risk that one firm changes its rules or delays payouts. It also means tracking several rule sets at once. Keep a single sheet listing each account's firm, size, daily limit, drawdown type and current room, and update it every day. The comparison tool helps you check rules across firms.

Operational habits that keep you funded

  • One plan per account type: a static-drawdown account and an EOD trailing account need different sizing near their limits.
  • Daily room check: before each session, note the remaining daily loss and drawdown room for every account. The drawdown calculator helps.
  • Staggered payouts: if cycles differ, plan withdrawals so that you are not forced to trade aggressively to meet a payout date.
  • Stop rules across accounts: if one account hits your personal daily stop, consider stopping all correlated accounts for the day.

When not to scale

Scaling magnifies whatever your process already does. If your journal shows frequent rule breaks, oversized trades after losses or one big day carrying the month, fix those first. A second account will not fix a process problem; it will make it more expensive.

FAQ

Is copying the same trade across several funded accounts safe?

It multiplies your exposure. One trade on three accounts is effectively one trade at three times the size, so a bad day can breach all of them.

Should I increase risk after my account scales up?

Not automatically. Review your risk per trade and decide in advance whether to keep it fixed in dollars or as a percentage of the account.
