Building a trading plan for a prop firm challenge

How to write a one-page trading plan built around prop firm rules: personal loss limits, risk per trade, setups, pacing and losing-streak rules.

November 3, 2026

4

Most failed prop firm challenges are not lost to a bad strategy. They are lost to a bad day: one oversized trade, a revenge streak after a loss, or a rule the trader forgot about. A written trading plan turns the firm's rules into decisions you make in advance, so you are not making them under pressure.

This lesson walks through the parts of a plan built specifically for an evaluation. The examples use round, hypothetical numbers; replace them with the exact rules of the challenge you buy.

Start with the rules, not the strategy

Before you write a single entry rule, copy the firm's risk rules into your plan word for word:

  • Profit target for each phase.
  • Daily loss limit, and whether it is balance-based or equity-based.
  • Maximum drawdown and its type: static, intraday trailing or end-of-day.
  • Consistency or best-day rules.
  • Minimum trading days and any time limit.
  • Restrictions on news trading, overnight or weekend holding, and EAs.

If any rule is unclear, ask the firm in writing before you start. Our comparison tool shows these fields side by side, but the firm's own terms are the final word.

Set your personal limits inside the firm's limits

The firm's limits are the point of failure, not a target. Set your own limits well inside them so that a normal losing streak never reaches the edge.

Daily stop

Choose a personal daily loss stop that is a fraction of the firm's limit. For example, if a hypothetical account allowed a 5% daily loss, you might stop trading for the day at 2%. Once you hit it, you are done until the next session, regardless of how good the next setup looks.

Risk per trade

Decide a fixed risk per trade as a percentage of the account, then work out how many consecutive losses it would take to hit your daily stop and the maximum drawdown. If five losses in a row would end the challenge, your risk is too high. Use the position size calculator to turn a percentage into a lot or contract size, and the drawdown calculator to see how much room you have left.

Trailing drawdown adjustments

If the drawdown trails, your effective room shrinks as you take profit off the table or give back open gains. Plan to recalculate your risk after each winning day, and note in your plan whether the limit locks at some point.

Define what you trade and when

A challenge is not the time to explore new markets. List the specific instruments you will trade, the sessions you will trade them in, and the setups you are allowed to take. For each setup, write down:

  • The conditions that must be present before you enter.
  • Where the stop goes, and the maximum distance you will accept.
  • Where you take profit, and whether you scale out.
  • The minimum risk-reward ratio you accept. The risk-reward calculator helps here.

Also list when you will not trade: around high-impact news if the firm restricts it, in the last minutes before a session close if you would be forced to hold overnight, or after your daily stop.

Pace the profit target

Divide the profit target across a realistic number of trading days instead of trying to pass in one session. Pacing does two things. It keeps any single day from dominating your results, which matters if the firm has a consistency rule. And it removes the urge to force trades when the market is quiet.

Write down what you will do when you are close to the target. Many traders reduce size in the final stretch, because giving back a large gain near the finish line is a common way to fail.

Plan for losing streaks

Every strategy has losing runs. Decide in advance how you will respond:

  • After two losses in a row, take a short break before the next trade.
  • After hitting your daily stop, stop for the day and review your journal.
  • After a set drawdown from your peak, cut your risk per trade in half until you recover part of it.

These rules feel unnecessary when you are winning. Their value is that you wrote them while calm.

Know your costs and your payout path

Your plan should include what passing actually earns you. Note the evaluation fee, any monthly or activation fees, and the firm's payout terms: when the first payout unlocks, how often you can withdraw and the profit split. Our payout guides summarize these for individual firms, and the profit calculator estimates your take-home amount.

A one-page template

  1. Firm rules: target, daily limit, max drawdown and type, consistency, minimum days, restrictions.
  2. Personal limits: daily stop, risk per trade, losing-streak rules.
  3. Markets and sessions: what and when you trade, and when you do not.
  4. Setups: entry, stop, target and minimum risk-reward for each.
  5. Pacing: daily profit goal and what changes near the target.
  6. Review: when you review your journal and what you check.

Keep the plan short enough to read before every session. If you break a rule, record it in your journal rather than rewriting the plan to fit the trade.

FAQ

Should my daily stop match the firm's daily loss limit?

No. Set a personal stop well inside the firm's limit so that a normal losing streak never reaches the point of failure.

How should I pace a profit target?

Spread it across a realistic number of trading days so no single day dominates your results and you are not tempted to force trades.
