Prop firms whose payouts run weekly, daily or on demand after the first withdrawal, with each program's first-payout rule, ongoing frequency, split at that frequency and methods, plus the buffers, caps and consistency checks that apply.
Topstep and Apex Trader Funding are two of the best-known futures prop firms, but this is an uneven comparison. Topstep's rules, prices and payout policy are published in a detailed help center that we checked in November 2026. Apex's are not, as far as we could reach: third-party trackers report that it replaced its evaluations on March 1, 2026 and changed rules and fees again in May and October, but its help center would not load and its homepage appeared to show older terms. Apex figures below are labelled "reported" where they come from third parties, and you should confirm them in your own dashboard before buying.

Every Apex row marked "Reported, unverified" comes from third-party trackers (Prop Trading Vibes, August 2026, and the PipBack change log) or from an Apex homepage that appears to show legacy terms. Apex's help center would not load during our checks in November 2026, so treat those figures as a starting point, not as confirmed terms.
FundedTime scores
Topstep scores 8.1/10 and ranks second of the 10 futures firms we rate. Apex Trader Funding scores 6.2/10 and ranks 10th. Scores follow our published methodology, including how much we could verify, and are not a guarantee of results.
Pricing and fees
Topstep's Trading Combine costs $49, $99 or $199 a month on the Standard path for 50K, 100K and 150K, plus a $149 activation fee per Express Funded Account (XFA). The No Activation Fee path costs more each month, and Topstep's own pages list two sets of prices for it ($85 or $95 for 50K). Resets cost the monthly fee and most fees are non-refundable.
Apex reportedly moved new evaluations to one-time fees on March 1, 2026. Prop Trading Vibes reported in August 2026 prices of $167, $249, $399 and $599 for intraday 25K to 150K evaluations and $390, $490, $790 and $1,490 for EOD versions, with 30 days to pass and a funded activation fee whose amount was not given. Trackers also report a May 2026 option with no activation fee but a higher evaluation price, and a five-account pack. The official homepage still showed monthly charges of $85 (Rithmic) and $105 (Tradovate), resets of $80 and $85 and up to 20 accounts, which appear to be legacy terms. We found no fee refund on passing.
Rules and drawdown
Topstep's targets are $3,000, $6,000 and $9,000. Its maximum loss limit is $2,000, $3,000 or $4,500, trails the end-of-day balance, is enforced in real time and locks at the starting balance. The daily limit is optional ($1,000 to $3,000) and pauses trading instead of failing you. The Combine has no published minimum days and a 55%-of-target best-day rule that raises your target if broken.
Apex reportedly targets 6% ($1,500 to $9,000) with drawdowns of $1,000, $2,000, $3,000 and $4,000. You choose between an intraday trailing evaluation, where the floor follows your highest balance in real time including open profit and there is no daily limit, and an EOD evaluation, where the floor moves on the close and a reported daily limit of $500 to $2,000 applies. Trackers report no evaluation consistency rule and no minimum days, but a 50% consistency test at payout time on Performance Accounts.
News: Topstep restricts trading briefly around Tier 1 releases and bans trading full size into scheduled major news. Apex's homepage says you can trade your normal system through news but bans news-specific strategies such as entering just before a release. Automation: Topstep allows strategies through its API ($29 a month), with no high-frequency trading and no use on live accounts; we could not verify Apex's current automation or copier policy. Neither allows overnight holding: Topstep requires flat by 3:10 pm CT and Apex by 4:59 PM Eastern.
Worked example: one reversing trade on 50K
Both 50K accounts use a $2,000 drawdown (Apex reported), so each starts at $50,000 with a $48,000 floor and a $3,000 target. On day 1 a trade runs to $1,200 of open profit, then reverses and you close for +$200, ending at $50,200.
- Topstep: the floor moves on the end-of-day balance, to $48,200. You keep $2,000 of room.
- Apex EOD (reported): also $48,200 and $2,000 of room.
- Apex intraday (reported): the floor followed the $51,200 peak to $49,200. You have $1,000 of room left after a profitable day.
On day 2 you lose $1,000. On Topstep with the optional $1,000 daily limit, trading is paused at $49,200 and the account survives with $1,000 of room. On Apex EOD you reach the reported $1,000 daily limit, and we could not verify whether that pauses the day or fails the account. On Apex intraday the balance falls to $49,200, exactly the floor, and the evaluation ends.
If your entries regularly show open profit before you exit, an intraday trailing floor costs you room on winning days. Topstep and Apex EOD avoid that; Apex intraday does not. Test your own trades in the drawdown calculator.
Payouts
Topstep's XFA Standard path qualifies after five winning days of $150 or more; the Consistency path after three traded days with the best day at 40% or less of profit. Each request can be up to 50% of the balance, with a $125 minimum and caps of $2,000 to $6,000 by size and path, at a 90% split. Live accounts are uncapped and pay daily after 30 winning days. US traders can use prop-to-brokerage (same day by 12 pm CT), Aeropay (instant after approval) or ACH ($30). Topstep discloses that 33.3% of funded participants received a payout in 2025.
For Apex, third-party reports from August 2026 describe payouts after five qualifying days, a $500 minimum, a safety-net balance ($52,100 on 50K), a first-payout cap of $1,000 to $2,500 by size and up to six requests per Performance Account. An Apex Live program launched May 1, 2026 reportedly offers daily withdrawals from $500. The homepage, likely legacy, says traders keep 100% of the first $25,000 and 90% after. We could not verify methods or timing. See the Topstep payout guide and Apex Trader Funding payout guide.
Platforms and US access
Topstep runs mainly on TopstepX, which does not connect to TradingView. Apex's homepage lists Rithmic plans with NinjaTrader and Tradovate plans compatible with TradingView, and a tracker mentions WealthCharts. Topstep accepts US traders and publishes a detailed eligibility list. Apex lists headquarters in Austin, Texas, but we could not verify its country list or KYC requirements. On Trustpilot, Apex holds 4.2 from 21,525 reviews and Topstep 3.7 from 15,022, the lowest among the futures firms we track.
Who each firm suits
Topstep
US traders who want rules they can read in full, a low first month, a daily limit that pauses rather than fails and fast US payout rails, and who are comfortable on TopstepX.
Apex Trader Funding
Traders already familiar with Apex who want to run several accounts, choose their drawdown type and use NinjaTrader or Tradovate, and who will check every rule in their dashboard before trading.
Which should you choose if…
- You want verified rules before paying: Topstep.
- You want NinjaTrader or TradingView: Apex, whose homepage lists both routes; Topstep centres on TopstepX.
- Your trades often give back open profit: Topstep or Apex's EOD evaluation, not Apex intraday.
- You want to be paid the same day in the US: Topstep, via Aeropay or prop-to-brokerage.
- You rate peer reviews highly: Apex has the stronger Trustpilot score, but confirm that recent reviews describe the current product.
Bottom line
Topstep scores 8.1/10 and ranks second of the futures firms we rate; Apex scores 6.2/10 and ranks 10th. Much of that gap is about what we could verify. Apex may still suit traders who know it well, but Topstep is the safer default for anyone who wants to read the rules first.
